Capricornus, a constellation of the Southern Hemisphere. It is between Sagittarius and Aquarius and is the tenth sign of the zodiac. (As a sign of the zodiac it is called Capricorn rather than Capricornus.) Ancient peoples described Capricornus as a goat, or as a goat with a fish's tail in place of the hindquarters. The name is from the Latin, meaning horn of the goat. Capricornus does not contain any very bright stars.

The Tropic of Capricorn, an imaginary line 23 27' south of the Equator, marks the southernmost points reached by the sun's vertical rays. It is so named because in ancient times the sun was highest in the southern sky when it was in the same area of the sky as Capricorn.
