Young, Charles Augustus (18341908), a United States astronomer noted for his spectroscopic studies of the sun. He made important discoveries about the sun's atmosphere, and was the first to determine the sun's rate of rotation on its axis. Young was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, and studied at Dartmouth College. He was a professor of astronomy at Western Reserve (185766), Dartmouth (186677), and Princeton (18771905).
