De Vries, Hugo (1848–1935), a Dutch botanist. He was one of three scientists who in 1900 independently rediscovered and verified Gregor Mendel's findings on heredity. De Vries introduced the experimental method into the study of evolution and first directed attention to the phenomenon of mutation. He developed a theory of evolution by mutation, based on experiments with the evening primrose. In The Mutation Theory (1901–03) and Plant Breeding (1907) he described the results of his research. De Vries attended the universities of Leiden, Heidelberg, and Würzburg. He was a professor at the University of Amsterdam, 1878–1918.
