Mohl, Hugo von (1805–1872), a German botanist. Mohl brought the word protoplasm into general use as the name for the fundamental substance of cells. He made careful studies of plant cell reproduction and the cellular structures of palms, cycads, and tree ferns. Mohl attended the universities of Tübingen and Munich, and was professor of botany at Tübingen, 1835–72.
