Celsius, Anders (1701-1744), a Swedish mathematician. He is known for his work in mensuration (the science of measurement) and was the first to propose the temperature scale that now bears his name. Celsius came from a family of scholars, professors, and churchmen. He was educated at Uppsala University and became a professor of astronomy there in 1730.
