Succulent, a plant with fleshy leaves or stems capable of storing large amounts of water. Cacti, aloes, and many spurges are succulents. Succulents are typical of climates having intense heat and low rainfall. Some succulents have additional means of conserving water, such as waxy coatings and leaves reduced to spines.
