Malachite, a basic carbonate ore of copper, usually found with more important copper ores. Most malachite is emerald-green or grass-green in color. It may occur in massive chunks or in fibrous bundles. Malachite is sometimes used for ornamental purposes, such as inlay work, for table tops, and for dye pigments. The ore occurs in many parts of Europe and in Chile, Australia, western and southern Africa, and the western United States.
