ANWR is an abbreviation for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a 19 million-plus acre National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaska North Slope region. ANWR is located just east of Prudhoe Bay?North America's largest oil field, which accounts for 17 percent of U.S. domestic oil production. Due to the belief that a vast amount of crude oil may be found on this land, ANWR has been the source of steady controversy since the 1950s. The ANWR was established in 1960 but a 1998 analysis conducted by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that there are about 7 billion barrels of profitable oil in the northern sector alone.
Of course, it's easy to find those who are pro-development and the protectors of the ANWR are also established. Their battles become a yearly ritual on Capitol Hill. No matter where you stand on the issue, we must never forget the very real potential for oil spills. Learn more about ANWR here.
