Greensburg is going through all sorts of changes in its pursuit of green. The residents and planners sometimes have to look to unlikely sources to find eco-friendly solutions in this endeavor. It?s not so unlike the frenzied search for sustainable energy sources that?s been kicked into high gear over the last few years.

One of the more exciting such sources is geothermal energy. Supporters of harnessing geothermal energy believe that it could be a far more powerful source than wind and solar power combined. Basically, the idea hinges on drilling down in geyser-loaded locales in order to power electrical generators with heat and steam. It?s an entirely renewable source of energy, as the power comes from heat and steam that simmer up from the earth naturally.

The world?s largest geothermal installation is The Geysers outside of Santa Rosa, Calif., and it powers over 850,000 homes in the area. Iceland also famously makes use of geothermal energy, and has geothermal power stations all over the country. So far, both have been extremely successful. Keep your eyes peeled for further innovations in this potentially vital energy source.
