Betel, or Betelnut, the nutlike fruit of the betel nut palm, a tree native to tropical southeast Asia. The tree is cultivated for its seeds, which are used to make a preparation that is chewed for its mildly stimulating effect. The seeds are boiled, sliced, and dried and then cured with lime and wrapped in the leaves of the betel pepper, a shrubby vine.
The betel nut palm is Areca catechu of the palm family, Palmae. The betel pepper is Piper belle of the pepper family, Piperaceae.
