Organic Substance, a substance that contains carbon combined chemically with at least one other chemical element. Most organic substances have been made by, or are derived from, living things (called organisms) or things that have lived. The branch of chemistry that deals with these carbon-containing substances is called organic chemistry. Substances lacking carbon are called inorganic substances.
