The Future of Smart Cities: An Interview With Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed

At this year's South by Southwest event in Austin, an extravaganza dedicated to showcasing the best in film, interactive and music, HowStuffWorks discussed the future of Atlanta as a smart city with none other than the mayor, Kasim Reed. (HowStuffWorks is based in Atlanta.)

So what exactly is a "smart city," and how will this work for the modern metropolis? It's an effort that will aim to bring connected technologies into the heart of the city infrastructure. Think the Internet of Things only on a city-wide scale. And Atlanta was recently chosen as a partner city, along with Chicago and Dallas, through an AT&T partnership.

But being a smart city can't just be about investing in and implementing cutting-edge technology. Large (and expensive) initiatives such as transportation, job growth and education also number among the issues cities such as Atlanta are embracing as economic and social change continues to evolve.
