Gloxinia, a flowering herb native to Brazil. The gloxinia is a low-growing plant with long-stalked, rounded leaves. The large, bell-shaped flowers are purple, red, or white, and usually grow singly. The fruit is a capsuie. Gloxinias are cultivated as greenhouse and house plants. They are started from bulblike tubers or from seeds or leaf cuttings. Gloxinias grow best in rich, moist soil that is protected from direct sunlight.

The gloxinia is Sinningia speciosa of the family Gesneriaceae.
