Microorganism, or Microbe, mī′krōb, an organism so small that it cannot be seen without the aid of a microscope. Microorganisms, especially those that cause disease, are popularly called germs. Not all microorganisms produce disease, however, and many are beneficial. The study of microorganisms is called microbiology.
